Their larvae are covered in bristly hairs and are tapered in shape similar to a carrot or they can be more oval in shape. To know where to focus the brunt of your cleaning first look for the primary source of the infestation which will be the area with the most signs of damage and beetles.

Varied carpet beetles and furniture carpet beetles have multi colored scales as adults. Larvae typically are light brown to black and covered in dense sometimes barbed hairs. Varied carpet beetles are black. Their larvae are grublike and covered with hairs.
